Allene was born on May 6, 1935 in Anson, Texas to Richard Lee and Sarah Viola Mayfield
Howell. Her life was spent primarily in Levelland, Texas with a short time in Powell, Wyoming. In
the fall of 1990, she and her late husband relocated to Farmersville, Texas, where she lived until
about three years ago. She was living in Plano, Texas at the time of her death. On Tuesday, the
morning of November 15th Allene woke up in the presence of her precious Savior, Jesus Christ.
In the fall of 1950, the desire for a coveted zippered notebook led her to an after-school job
picking cotton. It was there on that farm, east of Levelland that she met the farmer’s son who
would become the love of her life. She married John Derwood Hope Sr., on 18 February 1951.
They were married and enjoyed 60 years of love and companionship before his death in July of
2011. Just a few short years later they would return to that farm where they made their home
and raised their three children.
She lived her life completely devoted to her late husband, her children, grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. Her children will always carry the blessing of having had her as their mother.
Many others in her family and community were graced with the same blessing.
In her early 20’s she gave her heart to Jesus Christ and she served Him faithfully being His
hands and feet in her ministering to the needs of others and by the words of her testimony.
Her outward beauty, warm smile and impeccable sense of humor drew people in so they could
come to know her gentle, caring and giving heart. She loved people in many ways but one of
her best expressions was to love people with food. She shared the talent of her hands and the
bounty of her table and was always one of the first to invite you to have a seat or to deliver a
meal of comfort or celebration. Her door was always open and she willingly and lovingly would
open it wide to anyone in need of refuge and shelter.
Because of various health issues she spent her last days in confinement, but in spite of the
sadness this brought her she continued to share her love of Jesus with all she encountered. We
grieve her loss but we rejoice in her victory over death and that we can look forward to being
with her again in heaven.
Allene is survived by her children John Derwood Hope, and his wife Bette, Brenda Dahlberg and her husband Richard, and Cathy Buford; grandchildren Adam Lind Dahlberg, Daniel Hope, Ian Dahlberg, Dylan Hope, Eric Dahlberg, Blake Buford, Lee Buford, and Jordan Buford; great-grandchildren Camilla, Violet and George Hope, Presley and Briley Dahlberg, Kylah, Sadie and Elijah Buford and sister Ramona Jane Davis and her husband James. She was preceded in death by her husband John Derwood Hope, daughter Rebecca Gaye Hope and son in law Terry Buford and 5 siblings.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Sunday, November 27, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Allen Family Funeral Options. Allene will be laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. and a memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Allen Family Funeral Options in Plano.
From 1 Thessalonians:
As for praise, we have never asked for it. But we were as gentle as a mother
feeding and caring for her own children. We loved you dearly- so dearly that we gave you not only
God’s message, but our own lives too.
