Alan Donald Langley, passed away on November 13, 2023, in Plano, Texas. He was born in Presque Isle, Maine and spent his earliest years in Washburn, Maine. In 1965 his family moved to Connecticut. He graduated from E.O. Smith in Mansfield, Connecticut in 1970. He earned a degree in Data Processing. Later, he graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Real Estate and was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.
In the summer of 1980, career opportunities brought Alan to Dallas, Texas. With his specialty in COBOL programming, his services were contracted throughout the DFW Metroplex. In the fall of 1986, he made his final move to Plano, Texas where he and his family resided. In 1992, he created Texas Custom Software, Inc., which he ran for 24 years. In his later years, he worked in technical support. Throughout his career, he treated his co-workers like extended family. Alan always loved to include those around him-he NEVER met a stranger.
Despite changing zip codes throughout his life, Alan maintained his friendships he built in New England. Anyone who met Alan had the blessing to experience not only his charm and wit but also leave with a life lesson, whether they needed it or not. He always delivered a joke with a touch of sarcasm that left people with a belly laugh and a smile. He never passed up a good debate and often left people questioning their own political beliefs. Alan embraced anyone who walked through his front door.
Alan’s favorite hobbies included puttering in his garage and around his yard; he took a lot of joy in creating such a beautiful place to call home. He also loved driving his beloved ’97 Dodge Ram Truck while listening to music. Alan lived life to the fullest, always up for a road trip that included historical markers or balls of twine along the way. His planned trips included a well thought out, specific, route with no concern for the travel time.
He was a collector of many things meaningful, whether it be a coin from a significant year, a memento from a road trip, or songs from different eras. Alan’s love of coins spurred the creation of the Mansfield Numismatic Society in 1972.
Alan’s favorite holiday was Christmas, the child in him always continued to shine. He would decorate the house so you could “see it from space” as he would say. He put a lot of thought into any gift he gave and would add a note that explained each little detail of the gift. The magic was ALWAYS there.
Alan truly cherished family, friends, and neighbors. Through the years he became Grampy, with the blessing of his seven grandchildren, each one holding a special place in his heart. He saw the uniqueness in each grandchild.
Alan was prideful of his namesake and nothing he did was by coincidence. He was a proud man, intelligent and honest. Those who truly got to know him, knew him as “Uncle Al”.
His spirit and unmatched sense of humor will truly be missed by all.
Alan is survived by his wife Diane Langley of Plano, Texas; children Jay Langley and his wife Natalie of Spring, Texas, Jordan Hill and her husband Sean of Corinth, Texas and Kendall Scales and her husband Del of Corinth, Texas; grandchildren Noah and Aiden Langley, Charlie, Addie and Wade Hill and Deacon and Keller Scales; sister Kari Raymond and her husband Douglas of Coventry, Connecticut; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Donald Langley, mother Charline Dynes and her husband Val and sister Karel Stibitz.
A celebration of life will be planned for the weekend of February 19, 2024; additional details to come.
