Acie Carl Johnson

March 31, 1945 — September 22, 2023

Acie Carl Johnson was born on March 31, 1945, in Birmingham, Alabama.  His mother, Louise Johnson, passed when he was a toddler, and he never knew his biological father.  Do not feel sorry for him; he knew God, his heavenly Father.

Acie was raised by his maternal grandmother, Clara Johnson. His aunts, (Johnnie Mae, Viola, Ophelia, Elizabeth, and Ruthie Mae), helped his grandmother raise him. During his childhood, he spent many days with family in Columbus Georgia. After his last day of school in the 11th grade, his uncle Jeff and aunt Katie invited him to stay with them in Chicago. When school started in Birmingham that fall, he did not show up to finish high school. He did not protest when his uncle and aunt did not return him to Birmingham.  He did not like the school he was in, so he did not bother asking his uncle and aunt to take him back home. He eventually moved back to Birmingham.

In the late 1960’s, Acie moved to Bronx, New York to live with his older brother John. He worked at Sears & Roebuck’s auto department.  He climbed the ranks and became a shipping and receiving manager.  One day, in July of 1969, he walked pass the catalog department and noticed an attractive woman. He pretended to be an associate in the catalog department and took her order.  Unfortunately, he did not know how to process orders, because that was not his department. So, the woman never received her house shoes. When she returned to inquire about her order, an associate in that department asked the woman to describe the employee who took her order. When the woman gave a description of Acie’s appearance, the employee called the auto department and asked Acie to go to the catalog department. Acie had to confess that he only took Cora Faye Parker’s order so that he could get her name and number.

Acie and Cora’s first date was at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.  They started going to the theater every Wednesday night to see artists like The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, The Jackson Five, and all the other Motown singers.

Acie received Christ and was baptized as a child but was not a member of a local congregation when he met Cora. Cora invited him to attend worship service at Greater Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member. After attending services with Cora for about a month, he joined. On August 15, 1970, they became husband and wife. Five years later, they welcomed their favorite daughter, Alisha, into the world.

Acie worked at Sears for 24 years. Shortly after he was laid-off, he became employed as a porter at Calvary Hospital, in Bronx, New York.   Calvary is a hospice. He often talked about how he enjoyed talking with cancer patients and encouraging them. He obviously reaped what he sowed, because so many people visited and encouraged him while he fought cancer.

Acie had an enormous sense of humor. He pulled pranks on people and often asked others to help him with the pranks.  When he was in the hospital this past August, he was scheduled to have a G-Tube inserted into his stomach. The morning of his surgery, Cora was asleep on the sofa bed in his hospital room. He asked the attending nurse to wake her up and say, “Mrs. Johnson, we are ready to take you to surgery now.” Then he said, “If my wife says, ‘No, my husband is the one scheduled for surgery,’ I want you to say, ‘No, we have your name, Cora Johnson as the one who is having surgery today.” Needless to say, the nurse did not comply with his request and only laughed.

There are many words to describe Acie, like faithful, hardworking, caring, generous, loving, funny, talkative, shy, bossy, and direct. If you talked to him and your breath was not fresh, he would say, “I don’t mean no disrespect, but you need a mint, mouthwash, something!” Acie was a very active man, even well into his 70s. He served as a snack shack coordinator for Northside Kids at The Potter’s House of North Dallas. He volunteered at The North Texas Stitchers, The Plano Senior Center, and Willow Creek Church’s food pantry. He also worked out at the gym 4 to 5 days per week.

Acie will be missed by his immediate family, blood relatives, in-laws, church family, friends, and so many people whose paths he crossed.  If you check for fingerprints, you will see his on the hearts of so many lives he has touched.  Sleep in heavenly peace Acie ‘Pops’ Johnson.

The family will receive friends for a visitation between 6-8:00 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2023, at Allen Family Funeral Options.

There will be a funeral service to celebrate Acie's life at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2023, at The Potters House, 10501 Main Street, Frisco, Texas 75035.

Acie will be laid to rest at Ridgeview Memorial Park, 2525 Central Expwy North, Allen, Texas 75013.
