Donald Reed Thompson

Donald Reed Thompson of Plano, Texas died suddenly of a heart attack on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at his home. Born in Luling, Texas, July 13, 1940 to W.C. and Marguerite Thompson, Don graduated from Luling High School and Texas A&M University where he participated in the Corps of Cadets. Upon graduation, Don embarked on a diverse career which included teaching 6th grade and coaching basketball in Kenedy, flying in the Air Force and training pilots in his T-38, flying for Pan Am, as well as a management career with the phone company. He retired from AT&T in 1995. Along the way Don taught Sunday school for many years at First Christian Church as well as serving as Chairman of the Board.

Don's loves included his Lord, whom he followed to the end. His favorite verse was Psalm 46:10 - "Be still and know that I am God." He loved to read and think and write, often expressing his quirky humor in a poem or a letter to a grandchild. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether fishing, or keeping an eye on the hunting lease, or hanging out in his garage office.

While grateful for his entire life, his family is especially grateful for the last two years as a special gift. Two years ago lung cancer was supposed to take his life. Taking one day at a time he endured the treatments and survived, allowing for more time with his seven grandchildren, both at home and at their games, speeches, and performances.

Don is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dottie, his son David and his wife Karen and grandkids Reed, Drew, Trent, and Ansley of Plano; his daughter Dena Akridge and her husband Scott and grandkids Hunter, Ella, and Piper of Prosper; and his brother Billy and his wife Nancy of Holland.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 15, at 1:30P.M. at First Christian Church, 813 E 15th St., Plano, Texas.
