Larry L Shedenhelm

December 12, 1947 — July 23, 2010

Larry L Shedenhelm, 62, of Plano, passed away Friday, July 23, 2010 at Medical City Dallas. Memorial Services will be 11:00am Saturday July 31st at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 2700 Spring Creek Parkway, Plano Texas 75023.

Larry Shedenhelm was born in Belle Plaine, Iowa on December 12th, 1947, son of Gale and Stella Sylvester Shedenhelm. He married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Anne Brockman, on December 3rd, 1966.

Larry graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa and served his country from 1967 to 1971 in the United States Coast Guard. He went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from Drake University (Des Moines), earned a Master of Business Administration Degree from Amberton University and attended a number of management seminars over the course of his illustrious business career. Larry began his career in the grocery business in Des Moines with Hinky Dinky Supermarkets and he held the position of District Manager when the company was sold to Cullum Companies (Tom Thumb supermarkets). Larry quickly rose through the ranks of Tom Thumb as well, managing high-volume supermarkets throughout the Dallas metropolitan area before he was named Vice President District Manager in 1996 and then Vice President of Dallas Operations in 1998. Larry also served as Group Vice President of Operations with Safeway Stores before he left in 2002 to work with Winn Dixie Supermarkets as Regional Vice President of Operations before retiring in 2004.

Mr. Shedenhelm loved golf and entertaining family. He was a family man who was happiest when his children and grandchildren were with him- whether their gatherings found him cooking steaks on the barbeque or skiing in Colorado. His hobbies, in addition to skiing, golfing and grilling, included gardening, going to the theater and winemaking.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Brockman Shedenhelm, two sons, Larry Allen (Susie) Shedenhelm and Wade Owen Shedenhelm (Erica), one daughter, Natalie Shedenhelm Hunter (Scott), nine grandchildren and one on the way (Travis and Andy Axtman, Jayme, Jayde, and Ethan Shedenhelm, Nicholas, Ian, Lucas and Logan Hunter) his mother (Stella Sylvester McKee), and a brother, Ken (Sherry) Shedenhelm, mother-in-law, Bonnie Brockman and many cherished sister and brother-in-laws as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Gale Allen Shedenhelm, his brother, Randall L Shedenhelm and father-in-law, Furn Owen Brockman Jr.

Larry fought a long and arduous battle with Leukemia. His family would like to give a heart-felt thank you to Doug Buckner. Doug selflessly donated bone marrow to Larry not once, but twice. With Doug's graciousness, Larry was able to be with his family for the birth of his last two grandchildren, and even learn the happy news that there would be another addition to the Shedenhelm family. The family would also like to thank the tireless efforts of Drs. Bhushan, Berryman, Vance their caring staff, as well as the many kind and compassionate nurses and caregivers at Medical City Hospital in Dallas.

Larry L Shedenhelm is gone, but he will never be forgotten. His character was unquestionable, his love unshakable, his impact on us immeasurable.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.leukemia-lymphoma.org) or to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
