On August 28, 1961 he accepted the call of his country and enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces as a private in the Army. During his stint in the Army he was radio operator and always bragged that he had the best M.O. of any soldier in the field. He was stationed overseas for the majority of his Army career serving in Germany, France, andwas dropped "somewhere in the rice patties" of Vietnam. Sam always regretted leaving the Army and always commented that his Army Days were some of the best days of his life.
Once out of the Army, Sam met and married Irene Griego. Soon after their marriage, Irene and Sam welcomed their first child, Paula Malcom. During their marriage Sam continued on the Rodeo circuit and won an International Rodeo Association World Championship in 1970. The life of a rodeo cowboy was not conducive to marriage and Irene and Sam divorced.
Sam began driving 18 wheelers and met his second wife Sandy Vincolli while on the road in Michigan. Sandy had two kids of her own- Greg and Bobbi- and their blended family was formed. Sandy and Sam soon welcomed two more kids of their own, Lisa and Paul (Bud), and took temporary root in Sandy's home state of Michigan. Soon after Paul was born, Sam and his family moved to Orange County California. It was here that Sam, now a California Cowboy, finally felt a sense of home and resided in that county for the next 26 years of his life. In California Sam owned his own business, coached baseball, raised Dalmatian puppies, and cared for his horses.
In 2001, Sam suffered a major stroke and in 2003 he moved to McKinney, TX to be closer to his son Paul. Sam was passionate about many things, but his grandchildren were always his top priority and would talk for hours about their escapades.
On September 7, 2010 Sam passed away from complications associated with heart disease. Sam was a strong Believer in Our Lord Jesus Christ and so even though his life on Earth is over; his Eternal Life in Heaven has just begun.
Sam is survived by his brother Joe Malcom; his children Greg and his wife Chris, Bobbie, Paula, Lisa and her husband Mike and Paul and his wife Elizabeth; his grandchildren Tara, TJ, Nick, Stephanie, Brett, Nolan, Croix, Jax, Austin, Alexia, Ethan, and Summer; and his great grandchildren Hero, Asher, and Amara and extended family Barbara Brewster, Adrienne and Scott Allison and Christine Smith.
A small visitation will be held Thursday evening 09/09/10 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Allen Family Funeral Options in Plano, TX. A family service and burial will be held the following morning at the DFW National Cemetery.
If desired, memorials may be made in Sam's name to The Samaritan Inn, 1710 N. Mc Donald St, McKinney, Texas 75071 or 972-542-5302 X 226 or jmalatich@thesamaritininn.org.
