Jack Robert Nunan

March 9, 1928 — February 21, 2017

Jack Robert Nunan was born on March 9, 1928 in Los Angeles, California to John Henry Nunan and Irene Nunan. He was the oldest of 6 children. Jack graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles in 1946. He then enlisted in the Navy and served during the end of World War II and in the beginning of the Korean War. He was trained as a meteorological weather specialist by the Navy. Jack was honorably discharged in 1951. He then went to work for the National Weather Service / National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a weather specialist where he spent several years in the South Pacific working at various weather stations. Next, Jack spent two years working for the Santa Fe Railroad Company in California. Jack transferred back to NOAA and worked out of San Francisco sailing on MSTS ships carrying troops and families to Japan for several years. Following that, he was assigned to the main Weather Station in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was there he met, Nancie, his wife of 55 years.
Jack moved his family from Hawaii to two weather stations on the Pacific islands of Truk and Majuro before finally moving to Midland, Texas in 1973. He continued to work for the National Weather Service until his retirement in 1990. He retired with 41 years of government service including his time in the Navy. While in Midland, Jack and his family attended Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He spent countless hours participating in his sons' activities, in particular their journey through Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He enjoyed his bowling leagues and later ventured into square dancing and traveling. He also loved watching spaghetti westerns and reading Louis L'Amour novels. Some of his favorite memories included playing tennis; the time he spent in the South Pacific; living in Hawaii and the South Pacific, scuba diving in Truk lagoon and climbing Mount Fuji in Japan. Jack had a close bond with his brothers and sisters and often spoke fondly of them.
Jack and Nancie moved to Plano Texas in 1999 to be near their two sons and grandchildren. They joined West Plano Presbyterian Church. He loved being near his family and spending time with them. For nearly the last three years of his life, Jack suffered from dementia and resided at Life Care Center of Plano. Jack's family appreciates all the love and support from family and friends as well as the staff at Life Care and the Hospice team.

Jack is survived by his wife Nancie, sons Robert Alan Nunan and Timothy Brian Nunan (Cara), grandchildren Scott Lawrence Nunan and Callie Marie Nunan, siblings Fred Nunan and Dianne Bartlett (Art) and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
