Helen Pope was born on September 24, 1924 in Miami, Florida to Lawrence and Helen Rose Pope. She attended the Cushman School, Redlands High School, and Agnus Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She then began graduate studies in Art at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. While at home on break from UNC in 1951 at a neighbor's cookout, she met a handsome graduate student from the University of Miami. He was a Yankee from New England, and his name was Don Scott. In 1952 she married Donald Griggs Scott Jr. and honeymooned in Key West, Florida. In 1953 they welcomed their first son, Donald, into the world to be followed by three more sons over the next 10 years: John, David, and Daniel. The Scotts lived in Miami, Florida; Tallahassee, Florida; Dayton, Tennessee; Wheaton, Illinois; and finally settled in Texas in 1971. They made their home in the then small town of Plano. As the boys grew, Helen became an active member of the Plano Arts Community. As a member of the Plano Fine Arts League, and with the Gladys Harrington Public Library, she worked for many years to bring a wide variety of indigenous cultural art to the community, including the work of Native Americans and Inuit Eskimos. She taught graphic and sculptural art privately and through Plano Parks and Recreation, and often worked in the church nursery. After moving to Plano, Helen and Donald became members of Plano Baptist Church, Grace Bible Church in Dallas, and then for the last three decades of her life, the Plano Bible Chapel. Hers was a rich life filled with the Love of God, family, and art. Helen is survived by her four sons, Donald, John, David and Daniel Scott, nine grandchildren and siblings Susan Pope Hays and Allen Lawrence Pope. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald Griggs Scott. The family will receive friends for a visitation Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 2-4:00 p.m. at Allen Family Funeral Options.
