Barbara Mae Newman was born Monday, June 8, 1953 to Richard and Alice Malarkey with brown eyes at 4 pounds 11.5 ounces and 19 inches long. Richard was a steel worker and surveyor and Alice was a seamstress. They also helped to start the Mount Gilead Church of Christ, even having some of the first services in their home.
She was raised as an only child, however she had 5 adult step brothers, Allen, Richard, John, Karol, and Roger Malarkey who have since gone to be with the Lord. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of 12 and Baptized on August 1, 1965 at Mount Gilead Church of Christ.
At 15, she took on more family responsibility due to her father being partially paralyzed from a stroke. Barb drove the family car to do shopping, Dr. appointments, and church.
Barb graduated from Mount Gilead High School, in the state of Ohio on June 6, 1971.
On June 10th 1972, she married her high school sweetheart Richard Newman.
March 14, 1973, she had a beautiful baby girl, Jennifer. She was a gentile and caring mother.
Shortly after Jennifer was born, Barb and Richard bought a house in Beavercreek, OH and moved Barb's parents in with them. Barb now had all her family in one place, which gave her great joy. They attended East Dayton Church of Christ.
In 1978 Barbara and Richard divorced. Barb now was a single mother and was caring for her aging parents. A great burden which she took on with optimism and without hesitation. February 23rd 1987, Barb's father passed away, leaving the three generations to rely on each other and continue life together in Kettering, OH. She enjoyed hobbies with her Mom and shopping with her daughter.
November 19, 1993, her daughter was married and moved to North Carolina, leaving Barb and her Mom to enjoy cooking, sewing, watching the Chicago Bulls basketball together, and worshipping at Bethany Church of Christ. Barb had quality time with her Mom until she passed on September 9th 1995.
Barb worked at various firms in finance departments with roles such as bookkeeper, billing, and payables. She worked for companies in Ohio such as L.M. Berry, BlueChip Computers, and Dash Engineering. In her free time, Barb enjoyed cats, a good steak, shopping, spending time with friends and family, and all the things she used to do with her Mom. Her favorite color is blue and liked flowers, especially yellow carnations and white roses.
January 2005, Barb was considered medically disabled and was no longer able to work. In 2008, she moved in with her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in West Carrollton, OH. Late 2008, the family relocated to Plano, TX. Barb moved to Dallas in 2010 and joined Prestoncrest Church of Christ.
She was a cancer survivor and battled several organ malfunctions. Barb's health continued to decline, however she was a fighter through it all. She gently passed to be with the Lord on Monday, November 14th 2016 with family and friends by her side. Her final resting place will be at Lake View Cemetery in Lavon, TX.
Barb had a challenging life that she offset by surrounding herself with love, faith in God, and family. Barb has had a lifetime of solid friendships, a deep love of family, and an unwavering faith in God. She will be missed by all those who knew her. She will continue in our hearts and inspire us to have childlike faith in God, a willingness to help each other no matter how much or little you have, and whatever you are faced, God will comfort you.
