Dan Thompson

February 28, 1954 — November 5, 2016

Dan Thompson passed away suddenly at his home in Plano, Texas on Saturday, November 5, 2016
He was the youngest son of Maxine (nee Rapp) and Harold Thompson. Raised in Colby, Kansas with his brother, Tom (Brenda) and his sister, Diana Bacon, Dan graduated from Colby High School in 1972 and then received his bachelor's degree from KU. Dan joined the family business, Thompson Furniture and Colby Radio Shack. For the past 29 years, he was Vice President of Serv-Mart, Inc. in Plano, Texas. Dan had a passion for cars, motorcycles or anything with an engine. His first project was a 1956 Chevy Panel car. He rolled the paint and changed out the three on the tree to a Hurst shifter. His first car was a brand new pale green 1971 Mustang; he later drove a 240Z. Dan enjoyed membership in the North Texas Muscle Car Club and the North Texas Mustang Club. He competitively raced a black 1971 Mustang named Sally and was "win it all" or "first round runner up" or entered the "race of chumps". Dan served on the Board of Directors for the North Texas Muscle Car Challenge.
Dan married Kim Murphy on August 22, 1981. For 35 years she was the love of his life and often wrote love notes to her before going to work.
Dan always had cutting edge radio, television and audio equipment and shared his knowledge with many. His Hobbies included collecting unusual metal art (cats, fish) and target range shooting with friends. Dan was a good cook and a Crock-Pot connoisseur. His favorite meal was pork chops in the Crock-Pot, "nashed" TATERS with Velveeta cheese with a can of green beans, bacon bits and butter which he ate on a regular basis. Dan purchased Campbell's mushroom soup by the case and ate a "sampler" lunch at Sam's Club most Fridays. He always had cats because everyone knows you never really "own" a cat. In the late 70's his five minutes of fame was a scuba diving trip in Hawaii with John Denver in the diving group. Dan is survived by Kim Murphy Thompson, his siblings and sister-in law Brenda, his aunt, Anna Marie Kauten, mother-in-law, Margie Murphy, step-mother-in-law, JaNeanne Campbell, four brothers-in-law, John Campbell and wife Donna, Richard Murphy, Robin Murphy, and Scott Campbell, step sister-in-law Cindy Campbell and , cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to North Texas Mustang Club, P.O. Box 531374 Grand Prairie, TX 75053 or give to a charity of your choice in Dan's honor.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
