Lillian was born to Thomas M. Elrod and Jo Addie Leech Elrod on the family farm near
Purcell, Oklahoma. She spent most of her adult life after WWII in Oklahoma City,
raising her children and caring for her family . Lillian is predeceased by her precious
husband of 63 years, Alvin Haxel, and her youngest son, Michael Lynn Haxel. She is
survived by her son, Richard F. Haxel, and wife Margaret, of Sunrise Beach Missouri;
her daughter, Linda Finch, of Allen, Texas; and her daughter-in-law, Diane Haxel, of
Oklahoma City. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren: Dana Haxel Jazwinski and
husband Jeff, Holly Haxel McDannold and husband Matt, Phillip Haxel and wife
Shannon, Brian Finch and wife Melynee, Emily Finch Williams and husband Josh,
Loralyn Haxel Hamilton and husband Daniel, and Russell Haxel and wife Kari.
In addition, she leaves 12 great grandchildren: Robinson, Klaire and Rylan Haxel, Wyatt
and Scarlett Haxel, Caelyn Hamilton, Griffin and Gwyneth Finch, Della Williams,
Jackson and Lilli Jazwinski, and Nash McDannold., all precious in her sight:
Lillian's gifts of unfailing optimism, humor, faith in her Lord, music, creativity and
hospitality, made this world a brighter and happier place for all around her. She was an
accomplished oil painter, loved singing and playing piano, and was
always ready to enjoy a laugh or a prank with her friends and family.
Friends were such a part of Lillian's life. Lillian and Alvin loved their sweet supportive
friends from church, and had so many memories of special times at Council Road
Baptist Church. She played canasta with a group of neighborhood friends for over 50
years, and we all enjoyed some of the fun stories she'd tell about being with those
friends. Later, Rummikub games were a huge part of her entertainment at Southern
Plaza. If no one could join her, she would play the game by herself, with her three
children as her "dummy" partners. She delighted in telling the kids who won, or even
more fun, who lost.
The grandkids would never think of missing Christmas with the family. Lillian and Alvin
thought all year about a fun gift to get all the kids and grandkids. One year everyone got
remote control vehicles, and the entire house was filled with races, wrecks, and laughter
all weekend. Of course, there was always a little surprise envelope hidden somewhere
on each gift.
One day recently when Linda visited, Lillian said, "Good Heavens, it's morning!" Then
she added, someday soon I will wake up and say, "Good morning, it's Heaven!"
Sweet Lillian, enjoy your good morning in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 30, at 10:00 am in the Chapel of Council
Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Feed the Children,
Disabled American Veterans, or the charity of your choice.
