Dr. Charles Bliss Shuey, Jr. died early Saturday morning at Baylor University Medical Center after a long struggle with Congestive Heart Failure. He was born on October 25, 1936 in Dallas, Texas to parents Charles Bliss Shuey, Sr. and Mary Grace Hassell Shuey. After graduating from Highland Park High School, Dr. Shuey attended Southern Methodist University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. He then attended The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and served his Internship at Emory University. Dr. Shuey's Residency in Internal Medicine was completed at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. His specialty was in Pulmonary Medicine and he enjoyed a successful career spanning 45 years as a Doctor of Pulmonary Medicine at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. He became Director of Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care at Baylor Hospital in 2002.
Dr. Shuey also served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1965 and was a member of the Air Force Reserves from 1966 to 1970 serving at the rank of Major.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, scuba diving, cooking, traveling and spending time with his family. His grandchildren were a special joy in his life and they affectionately referred to him as "Poppy".
Dr. Shuey is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Vernell Sultemeier Shuey, his sister Jane Shuey Lindeman of Colville, Washington, son Brian Edward Shuey and his wife Tracey of Richardson, Texas, Shannon Shuey Mazar and her husband Jeff of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Shuey Merkle and her husband Steve of Dallas, Texas, and grandchildren Emily Grace Mazar, Jackson Edward Shuey, Kathryn Bliss Mazar, William Charles "Charlie" Shuey, Wyatt Lee Merkle, Caroline Grace Merkle, Joshua Ryan Mazar and James Braden Merkle.
A memorial service honoring Dr. Shuey's life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at King of Glory Lutheran Church, 6411 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, Texas 75240. Dr. Shuey will be laid to rest at Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery.
