Barbara June Raun Barton passed away in Dallas, TX on February 5, 2015 at the age of 82. Born to Thelma and Ernest Raun in Denison, Iowa in June of 1932, Barbara was a proud member of a large pioneer Nebraska family.
She graduated from Denison High School in 1950, and was active in most school activities. After high school, she went to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Clothing and Textiles. During her time there, she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Mortar Board honor society. In 1953 she was an Ak-Sar-Ben Countess in Omaha. After graduation, she worked as an Associate Professor in the Home Economics Department of the University of Nebraska. She was a life member of the UNL Alumni Association and a proud Cornhusker fan. She and her husband maintained season tickets to Cornhusker football games in Lincoln throughout their lives, despite living in Dallas for almost 46 years.
In her final semester of college, she met the love of her life. Her future husband still had 2 more years of college. Without a commitment from him of any kind, she turned down a scholarship offer from the University of California- Berkley graduate school so she could stay in Lincoln and see what developed. In April 1955, she married Wesley Barton and raised three children while moving from Lake Charles, LA, to Lafayette, LA, to Houston, TX, to New Orleans, LA and finally to Dallas, TX in 1968.
Barbara was active in the Dallas area swim community and was an AAU-certified swim official. She also enjoyed being a member of the Richardson area Kappa Bridge Club. After the death of her father, she served as President and manager of her family farm in Wall Lake, Iowa. For many years she kept the books for the farm and for her husband's geological consulting business.
She is survived by her son Thomas and his wife Deborah, son James and his wife Jean, daughter Elizabeth Perez and her husband Richard, sister Nancy Oxley and her husband Paul, and six grandchildren, Alexandra Barton, Adam Barton, Christopher Barton, Rachel Barton, Stephanie Berry, and Russell Berry.
A service will be held at the Plano Centre at 2000 East Spring Creek Parkway
Plano, TX 75074 at 3:00 PM on Monday, February 9, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Barbara's honor to the North Texas Food Bank.
