Barbara Ellen Innis, age 82, of Plano, died at Medical Center of Plano on November 30, 2014, surrounded by her family. She was born May 15, 1932, to Charles and Clara Naylor in the little farming community of Cayuga, Indiana. She was married for 61 years to Joseph Paul Innis, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Cayuga High School in 1950, with honors and at the top of her class, and as an accomplished trumpet player. After high school, Barbara worked as a telephone operator until she and Joe were married in 1951. She maintained residence in Indiana and Illinois while Joe served in the Navy during the Korean War and deployed in Asia. Following his Naval Service, Barb and Joe resided in Terre Haute, IN, and Danville, IL while Joe completed his Bachelors' degree in Electrical Engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute.
In 1959, Barb and Joe relocated to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in support of Joe's occupation. While living in Cedar Rapids from 1959 to 1978, and raising her three children, Barb also served the local community as a volunteer for multiple organizations and local school activities. Further, Barb was also employed in the early 1960's by Collins Radio.
In 1978, Barb and Joe subsequently relocated to Plano, TX. Barb, as she did for the community of Cedar Rapids, volunteered and supported numerous organizations and activities including Plano Balloon Association (which resulted in a hot air balloon ride despite being afraid of heights). Barbara was also employed by the Plano Independent School District at Hughston Elementary School.
Barb's most significant and largest contribution in her life was her success as a loving Mother. Additionally, her passion for family well-being, her "benchmark" faith, impeccable kindness and her uncanny ability to fight and persevere had a lasting impact on so many. She maintained her strength and courage until the last minutes of her life. She was very proud of raising her family and seeing them succeed in life and have families of their own, and considered herself immensely blessed to have seven grandchildren, all of whom were home for this past Thanksgiving.
Barbara is survived by 3 children and 7 grandchildren: son David and his wife Paula, grandson, Scott and his wife, Linda, and grandson, Bryan; son Paul and his wife Rhonda, and granddaughters Jillian and Hailee; daughter Mandy Tschoepe and her husband Ernie, and grandchildren Clara, Katie and Bennett. She is also survived by her sister Mary Lou Alumbaugh of Georgetown, Illinois and her brother John Naylor of Little Rock, Arkansas. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Joe and a grandson, Spencer Tschoepe.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Mom's close friends and neighbors whom have been such wonderful supporters over the years.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held Monday, December 8th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Custer Road United Methodist Church, 6601 Custer Rd., Plano, Texas 75023. Burial will occur at Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana at an undetermined date in the future.
The family suggests memorials to the American Lung Association, given in memory of Barbara Innis.
