Walter Lyle Reed, Jr, 75, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in Dallas, Texas. He was surrounded and supported through his battle with cancer by his wife, children, brother and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter L. Reed, Sr. and Eleanor Brady Reed. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Knapp Reed; Children, Stacy Wehrly and husband, Matt and Walter "Trey" Reed, III and wife, Shauna; Grandchildren, Jack and Beau Wehrly, and Georgianna Reed; Brother, Ronald Lynn Reed and wife Linda; Sister-in-laws, Gilsie Wiese and husband Allen, Pam Knapp, Jean Markham and husband Frank; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Walter was born September 2, 1939 in Austin, Texas. He grew up in Hearne where his parents ran W.L. Reed Motor Co. He graduated from Hearne High School in 1957 and Baylor University with a BBA in August of 1961. He married Mable Joan Knapp on June 5, 1965. They were approaching their 50th wedding anniversary. .
Walter served as a Lieutenant in the Navy from 1961 until 1968 as a Naval Navigator. He served during the Vietnam War and earned the National Defense and Vietnam Service Medal along with the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. After leaving the Navy he graduated from Baylor Law School in Nov of 1970. He became a member of the State Bar of Texas in December of 1970. He served as a corporate and real estate lawyer for various firms throughout Texas. He was a lead attorney with the FDIC in Midland, San Antonio and Dallas until his retirement.
His time of service in the military led him to be a real enthusiast for air shows as well as photography. He combined those interests by taking his two grandsons to airplane events and having them pose for pictures sitting in various cockpits. He also enjoyed watching the Baylor Bears play football and basketball, particularly over the last few years. One of his last trips was to take a private tour of the new Baylor Football Stadium which was a highlight for him.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Calvert Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014 in Calvert, Texas.
