Elizabeth R. (Betty) Soden was born on June 5, 1927 in Rio Grande City, Texas to parents Harold Albert Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth Ross Glass Smith. She passed from this life into eternity on October 18, 2014 in Dallas, Texas.
Betty moved to Dallas at age 6 with her family in 1933, grew up in Oak Cliff on Hampton Road, graduated from Sunset High School in 1944, graduated from SMU in 1948 B.S. degree in Psychology, and later her Masters degree in Liberal Arts, and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She married James Camillus Soden, Jr. on Groundhog's Day, 1948. She worked at the Cotton Exchange Building then later as Personnel Director for the Dallas office of the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, her brother Harold Smith, Jr., sister Rita Barton, and brother Norman Byrd Smith.
She always showed her children by example and was always putting their welfare ahead of her own. She had a wonderful sense of humor, a dry wit, wouldn't suffer fools lightly and was always up for a good game of bridge, preferring to respond 1 No Trump to any opening bid. She loved reading a good murder mystery with a twisted plot and would solve the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle weekly.
Betty is now enjoying her life in spirit with lots of humor and admiration of beauty.
Betty is survived by her children Victoria Elizabeth Verinder, Penelope Ruth Posner and Christopher Stephen Soden, son-in-law Gene Verinder, grandson Dylan Brian Verinder, his wife Julie Wagner, greatgrandsons Zion and Ezekiel of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and grandson Daniel Edmund Verinder, his wife Abra and great granddaughter Simi of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held October 22, 2014 at Plano Mutual Cemetery at the Northwest corner of 18th Street and Jupiter Road in Plano. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on May 9, 2015 at The Episcopal Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, 6525 Inwood Road, Dallas, Texas 75209.
