On September 17, 2014 a respected physician, of 30 years and my best friend, went with the angels to heaven.
Dr. Harold Clay Henderson, M.D. passed after struggling from chronic heart and lung complications.
Clay was born in 1956 at the Dow Chemical Hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas. As a boy he enjoyed playing baseball and pretending to be John Wayne with his brother Trey and his friends. All the while, Clay was having dreams of becoming an M.D. He loved his family so very much that he would sit at the kitchen table for hours with his mom drinking coffee and listening intently as she told stories about the past.
As he grew he fell in love, married and had two beautiful boys; his sons Andrew Kyle and Daniel Scott. He doted on those boys and they were the apples of his eyes.
Clay is preceded in death by his son Andrew Kyle. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife of 12 years, Heather McMeekin Henderson and his son Daniel.
His stepson, Ryan McMeekin kept him young as he never missed a soccer or baseball game. Chasing after a little one was a chore but nothing warmed Clay's heart like Ryan running to the door when his "Daddy" Clay got home from work. Clay is also survived by "Uncle Ray" Ledlie of Houston, Ms. Geneva West and his cousin Connie of Shawnee, Oklahoma.
After completing high school, he went immediately to Stephen F. Austin with the goal of becoming a doctor. Clay graduated Magna Cum Laude from Stephen F. Austin in 1978 and received his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1985.
He practiced in Tyler, Texas for a time and then came to Dallas. In Tyler, Clay delivered many babies, but once in Dallas, he practiced internal medicine and general practice. He felt a calling to do pain management so he did a fellowship and began treating pain patients. Many times, Clay treated indigent patients at no charge. He would then reach for his wallet and give these people enough money for their medications and a hot meal. Clay became one of the founding fathers for the use of Botox for migraine headache patients. He was always on the cutting edge of medicine. Dr. Henderson was a kind, loving man with a gentle heart. He will be truly missed by many people whose lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held at Hunters Glen Baptist Church, 4001 Custer Road, Plano, Texas 75023 on Tuesday, September 23 at 1:00 PM. Friends and family are welcome. A reception will follow the service.
