Charlie Lyle, HMCS -USN (Retired), age 67 passed away on Saturday August 16, 2014 after a long and courageous battle with heart and lung disease. Charlie was born in Fountain City, Tennessee but moved to Texas when he was a baby and proudly claimed Texas as his home. He grew up working on the family farm in Wichita Falls, Texas and developed a strong work ethic that stayed with him his entire life. Charlie's family moved to Corona, California when he was 16 and he attended Corona High School where he made many friends and keep in touch with them for over 40 years. He was affectionately known as "Tex" because of his habit of wearing blue jeans, western shirts and boots the entire time he was in school; something that was unheard of in Corona.
Charlie joined the United States Navy in October 1964 where he became a Medical Corpsman, a job he was born to do. He excelled at this calling and proudly served three tours in Viet Nam where he earned several awards including the Silver Star, Bronze Star w/ Valor and Four Purple Hearts. He retired after 27 years in the Navy and left his beloved Navy to begin a second career as a Medical Instructor for Kaplan College. He worked at Kaplan College for 10 years and influenced so many people who continued to stay in touch with him long after they graduated. He loved teaching and he loved his students and they in turn loved him. He reluctantly retired from teaching because of health issues, and he missed it terribly.
Charlie's passion outside of teaching was riding his Honda Goldwing and most weekends would find him and his wife, Judy traveling the Hill Country around San Antonio and traveling around the US whenever time permitted. Family motorcycle trips with Judy, son Kevin and his wife Alison was something that he treasured and he looked forward to the trips and the time spent together.
His other passion and joy was being a grandfather. Charlie had always said that he did not want to be called grandpa, he was going to have his grandkids call him Charlie or G-person, because he did not like Grandpa. That soon changed when Logan, Riley , Abby and Annabelle entered his life and he was stuck with "grandpa Charlie" a title he cherished and would not have changed for anything.
Charlie's final and most rewarding career was the day he and Judy became volunteers with the Carrollton Citizens Patrol Association. He loved being around his friends, working at the PD and telling his many stories and jokes to his fellow volunteers and police officers. His wish was to go to Washington DC in 2015 as a volunteer for Team Texas and the 2015 Road to Hope Ride.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Judy, son Kevin McCoy and his wife Alison as well as his sisters Letha and Wanda and his brothers Dale and Don, brothers-in-law Bob Van Dyke and wife Frankie, Rick Morris and Mike Morris and sister-in-law Lynda Taylor and husband Chuck. He loved and cherished his wonderful grandchildren, Logan, Riley, Abby and Annabelle. A Memorial Service to honor Charlie's life will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Carrollton, 2400 N. Josey Ln., Carrollton, Texas 75006. Burial at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in the columbarium will take place Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10:30 AM, 1520 Harry Wrzback Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
