Barry was born on May 4, 1957 in Charleston, WV, to Burven and Gloria, where he grew up with his older sister Kimberly and his younger brother Blair. At age 13 he moved to Jacksonville, Florida to live with his Dad, step-mom Barbara and 5 other siblings (1 brother and 4 sisters.) While in Florida, he enjoyed skateboarding, riding dirt bikes on the beach and surfing with his Dad. Since it was the early 70's, Barry gladly adopted the shoulder length hippy hair of the time, which was received with some alarm when he returned to WV to finish high school. He lived with his mother Gloria and brother Blair in Cross Lanes, where he was very active in athletics. He participated in wrestling and baseball and graduated from Nitro High School in 1975.
Barry joined the United States Air Force in 1976 and traveled to the United Kingdom where he spent the next 2 years. He then returned to the United States where he completed his remaining two years of service at Beale AFB, CA. He reached the rank of Sergeant while performing duties as a Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Specialist. Though Barry received his honorable discharge from active duty in 1980, he continued to serve his country for two more years in the AF reserves.
After his military service, Barry attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where he graduated Magna cum Laude with a BA in Computer Science.
Upon graduation from SWTSU, Barry made the Dallas Metroplex his home where he was able to put his savvy computer programming and project management skills to work. During his career, he was employed by several high tech firms, most recently, the VHA.
Throughout his life, Barry had many interests and hobbies which included working out at the gym, gardening, cooking, motorcycles, classic cars and a love of all types of music as well as electronics and audio equipment. He was an avid reader and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and desire in furthering his professional career.
Barry was always first at the dinner table and never met a dessert he didn't like. He was an impeccable dresser. He was nearly meticulous to a fault, a military trait he kept his whole life (have you seen his closets?). He had a very dry sense of humor and we all loved that about him.
He gave his time and energy to whomever needed help. And when it came to matters he cared most deeply about, particularly his personal and family relationships, selfless to a fault. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend and never failed to personalize every card he ever sent with a heartfelt loving message. He was married twice and had a long term relationship with his dear friend Susan Coons.
Barry passed from this life on Saturday January 25, 2014. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
