Evelyn S Cady

May 7, 1918 — June 2, 2013

Evelyn Sierk Cady passed away peacefully on June 2, 2013 after complications from a hip fracture. Evelyn had just celebrated her 95th birthday in May. Evelyn is the widow of Percy Luther Cady, Jr. of Syracuse, New York. She was a strong, courageous woman who thought nothing of taking a train in 1942, by herself, from Buffalo, New York to Corpus Christi, Texas to get married and be with her husband Percy who was stationed at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. She then moved to Whidbey Island, Washington where she waited for her husband to return from his tour of duty in the Aleutian Islands. Upon his return in 1946, Evelyn and Percy drove across the country with their brand new 6 week old son, Bruce. She was the valedictorian of her class at Attica High and went on to earn a Master's degree in library science at the University of Rochester. She became the librarian at Alexander Central School until her retirement. Evelyn was an accomplished singer and piano player. She loved music and would often break into song without prompting. She played the organ at Darien United Methodist Church and led the choir for many years. Up until her death, she continued to play the piano for church services at her assisted living residence; and, most recently, at her community group home. She was also the highlight of many a celebration when she would "play a tune" for her family and friends. She was born in Attica, New York to parents Carolyn Broadbooks Sierk and Raymond G. Sierk and was the last survivor of her family. She was predeceased by her brothers: Norman Sierk and Paul Sierk, both of Darien, New York; and, her sister Edith Sierk Bolles of Houghton, New York. She is survived by her son, Bruce A. Cady, and daughter-in-law Armi Cady of Plano, Texas, and daughter Susan Cady Stover and son-in-law Peter Stover of Valley Falls, New York. Grandchildren, Bryan R. Cady and Dr. Melissa R. Cady, both of Austin, Texas; Carolyn Stover of Valley Falls, New York, and Laura Stover Fitzgerald and grandson-in-law Thomas Fitzgerald of Nashville, Tennessee. A time of remembrance celebrating Evelyn's life will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 3:00 -5:00 PM with words of comfort at 3:30 PM at Allen Family Funeral Options, Plano, Texas. If desired, contributions may be made in Evelyn's name to: The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, 42 Broadway, Suite 1724, New York, NY 10004, (212) 619-1400 or The ALS Association Texas Chapter, 1231 Greenway Drive, Suite 270, Irving, TX. 75038, (877) 714-0088.
