Donald K. Schofield was born October 9, 1926 to Warren and Lillie Leard Schofield in Nashua, New Hampshire. He passed from this life on March 28, 2013. At age 17, desiring to serve his country, he left high school and joined the US Navy. After his service in World War II, he returned to Nashua to marry his sweetheart, L. Jean Bedell on September 7, 1946. He received a degree in radio and television broadcasting from DeVry University in New York. After the birth of their son, D. Joseph Schofield, Don and Jean moved to southern California.
In California, Don was employed by Lieberscope Industries and Gladding McBean before gaining employment with Jet Propulsion Laboratories, a division of NASA, in Pasadena, CA. At JPL, Don served as a project manager for several projects including, Apollo to the moon, the Mariner and Viking projects to Mars and the Voyager project to Jupiter. Concurrently, he served as the Minister of Music for various area churches. During these years, daughters Jean Beth and Evelyn Joy were born into the family.
Upon early retirement from JPL, he received an Associate of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, CA. After graduation, Don served as Minister of Education and Music in California churches. Upon retirement he and Jean moved to Dayton, NV and there spent several happy years before Jean's passing on October 30, 2007.
He is survived by Roy Schofield of Richmond, Indiana. Surviving children are son and daughter in law, Joe and Jeannne Schofield of Carrollton, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Jean Beth and Cliff Poe of League City, TX; and daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Steve Robinson of Rowlett, TX. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren, Amy Short, Courtney McPherson, John Roger Schofield, Tammy Johnson, Matthew Poe, Bethanie DePalermo, Daniel Robinson and Alisa Robinson. Also surviving are 10 great grandchildren, a large extended family and many friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Prestonwood Baptist Church, 6801 W. Park Blvd, Plano, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Garland Christian Academy Music Dept. in care of Evelyn Robinson, 7506 Westhaven Dr., Rowlett, TX 75089.
