Sharon Barton

Sharon Jenn Barton, 73, of Frisco, Texas died March 16, 2011 at Baylor Medical Center in Plano, Texas following a lengthy illness. Sharon was born February 24, 1938 in Des Moines, IA of Elizabeth (Betty) and Ferrel(Bud) Barton. She is survived by family and extended family, Barbara Kellogg(Jim), Kare Casten(Lee), Bety Durland, four nephews: David Casten, Douglas Casten(Kathy), Barton J. Kellogg(Jennifer), Patrick Kellogg, grand niece and nephews Alexandra Kellogg, Markus Casten and Alexander Casten. Sharon grew up in Urbandale, Iowa. She attended Urbandale High School graduating in 1956. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Harold Reynolds in Urbandale before attending and graduating from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. She pursued a career in the field of dental hygiene. She was an instructor at the School of Dental Hygiene, College of Dentistry, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI in 1963. She also taught at the College of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Sharon founded and directed the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. She established the curriculum for the Dental Hygiene Program, College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City where she remained until she retired in 1976. Saron always pursued knowledge and proved to be especially sensitive to children in need. She received her Master's Degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond in Counseling Psychology in 1976. She continued her professional career working at the Department of Pediatrics, Children's Memorial Hospital in Oklahoma City. Her hobbies were working crossword puzzles, reading, and traveling. A great majority of her travel included watching her friends show the beautiful Morgan horses. Sharon had an interest in the American Morgan Horse Association and was a life member of the American Morgan Horse Institute. When she moved to Frisco, Texas she made many new friends and extended family with her warmth, humor and generosity. Sharon's winning smile and love of life endeared her to family and friends. She will be dearly missed by all. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be given in memory of Sharon Barton to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, TX, 3600 Gaston Ave s 100, Dallas, TX 75246. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Baylor Medical Center, ICU at Plano for their love and compassionate care. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Resthaven Cemetary, West Des Moines, Iowa with a reception following at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. A celebration of Sharon's life will be held at a later date for friends living in and around Texas
