Susan Dee King

September 24, 1955 — June 14, 2011

Susan Dee Millhollin King was born on September 24, 1955 in Santa Maria, California. She was a joyously wanted child by her parents Ingrid Korpela Allen and Ivan Colman Millhollin.

She moved with her mother, sister, and step-father in 1967 to Weslaco, Texas where she attended public schools. In high school, she met and fell in love with Walter Bryan King. They were sweethearts that grew and evolved into a deep and committed bond that is rare. It was a blessing to both of them, their children and extended families. They married August 14, 1972.

Bryan and Susan had two children. Donald Bryan King was born January 16, 1973 and Rebekah Susan King Holub was born December 10, 1978. Susan was able to parent each of her children uniquely. They have grown into strong adults she was proud of. She was fondly known as Janny to her five grandchildren, Cameron and Corbin Holub, Haley Pollard, Alyssa and Derek King. She was passionate about these children and they brought her a great deal of delight to her life.

Susan was a certified surgical technician. Not only did the scientific side of her career intrigue her, it also fulfilled her innate ability to nurture. Her co-workers have described her as exceptional, intelligent, and of the highest integrity. Susan volunteered at hospice, Faith in Practice and was involved in many Breast Cancer fundraisers and organizations.

Susan loved to travel. Some of her favorite places were the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Colorado and Guatemala. She traveled extensively through the United Stated including Alaska and Hawaii. Her travels did not keep her solely within the United States, she also visited Mexico, Spain, Morocco and France.

She was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer in June of 2003. She became intensely aware of her time and used it so fully that it inspired many who were close to her. She felt strongly about Faith in Practice and was passionate in being of service to others.

She was curious and intelligent. She loved to read, camp and hike. Susan was open-minded and interested in different people and cultures. She was courageous and kind. If you ever heard her stories, you know what a great story teller she was. Susan was always able to find a laugh in the time of crisis. Her sense of humor was enjoyed by many.

One person who knew her well said that more than anything she wanted for her family and friends to keep on, be happy and live. He summed her up in words that many have used to describe her; good to the core, of the highest integrity, refreshing, honest, cried easily but not a sad person and tough as nails.

Susan passed away June 14, 2011 in her own bed. Her husband and children were in the room with her. Her grandchildren were in neighboring rooms, squealing and laughing, sending their unique music down the hall to her listening heart. It was just as she wanted.

Susan is survived by her loving husband Bryan King, daughter Rebekah Holub, son Donald King and his wife Michelle, grandchildren Cameron and Corbin Holub, Haley Pollard, Alyssa and Derek King, father Ivan Millhollin, mother Ingrid Allen and her husband William, sister Carol Lyles and her husband Damon. In addition she will be missed by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Gift of Prayers

Blessed is the spot,

and the house, and the place,

and the city, and the heart,

and the mountain,

and the refuge, and the cave,

and the valley, and the land,

and the sea, and the island,

and the meadow

where mention of God

hath been made

and His praise glorified.
