Ron graduated from Stadium High in Tacoma, received his BS from Seattle University in 1954 and his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1958. Ron then interned with the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he met his wife of 51 years, Carol. They were married in 1960 and relocated to Houston where he finished his residency in Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat or ENT) at Baylor College of Medicine. In 1969, Ron and family moved to Waco, where they resided for 30 years. There, Ron served as an extraordinary physician, surgeon and healer in private practice for the citizens of Waco and Central Texas. Ron founded Waco Otolaryngology Associates (now Waco ENT) and successfully grew the practice to three full time ENTs.He tirelessly tended to the needs of his patients at both Hillcrest and Providence hospitals, and his added dose of dry wit and humor helped many to a speedy recovery.
Outside of his practice, Ron was an avid sportsman, and especially enjoyed fishing and bird hunting with his sons. Ron also was a strong supporter of Baylor University athletics, and was a team physician for Baylor Bears football. He was an active member in the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the Texas Medical Association, Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, the Waco Rotary Club and Hedonia.
Ron retired in 1999 and moved with his wife to the North Dallas area to be closer to their adult children and grandchildren. He and Carol are now members of Christ Church in Plano.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Ann Knudsen.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Johnson of Fairview; three children: son, Glen Johnson and wife, Kay, of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; daughter, Ellen Johnson of Evergreen, Colo.; and son, Gary Johnson and wife, Kristin, of Irving; four grandchildren, Colin Johnson, Garrett Johnson, Logan Johnson and Zoe Johnson; a sister, Glenda Eckroth of Olympia, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews in the greater Puget Sound area.
